North Star Community Credit Union is proud to announce that Mike Black, Chairman of North Star Community Credit Union’s Board of Directors, has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Dakota Credit Union Association (DakCU). The award recognizes a credit union volunteer who has selflessly contributed time, effort, and expertise to the growth and success of their credit union, while demonstrating unwavering commitment to the broader credit union movement, advocacy efforts, community service, and the cooperative principles that define the industry.

Mike’s dedication to the credit union difference has spanned more than two decades. He has served on the North Star Board of Directors since 2003, including the past 11 years as Chairman, helping guide the organization through transformative growth while never losing sight of the credit union’s member-first philosophy. His volunteerism is rooted in a desire to uplift others—whether through thoughtful governance, charitable initiatives, or community partnerships—and his influence has created a lasting legacy within North Star Community Credit Union and the communities it serves.

“Mike is the kind of volunteer who leads with both heart and purpose. His influence extends far beyond the boardroom—he’s built relationships, inspired generosity, and worked tirelessly to represent our members and mission in every setting. Mike is a living example of what it means to put people first. His leadership, integrity, and compassion have left a lasting mark on our credit union and the communities we serve.” Bob Herrington, North Star Community Credit Union President/CEO

A tireless advocate for credit unions, Mike has represented North Star Community Credit Union at state and national levels, including attending five Governmental Affairs Conferences in Washington, D.C.. He has also played a key role in North Star’s charitable efforts, most notably leading the credit union’s $100,000 pledge in 2024 to support the MicroPreemie Unit at Sanford Children’s Hospital through Credit Unions for Kids. His leadership has also enhanced fundraising partnerships with organizations like the Rugby Car Club, Farm Rescue and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

In addition to his 22 years with North Star Community Credit Union’s Board of Directors, Mike is deeply engaged in the Rugby community and beyond. He has served in leadership roles with the Rugby Car Club, North Dakota Farm Bureau, North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, multiple school boards, and the Tunbridge Elevator Board. He and his wife, Deb, are also active volunteers with the Great Plains Food Truck & Food Pantry, delivering meals and coordinating community food assistance.

Mike balances his volunteerism with a lifetime of achievement in agriculture and small business. After more than 15 years managing a successful feeder cattle operation with his family, he shifted his focus to craftsmanship and founded Black Thunder Woodworks, a custom cabinetry business recognized for its quality and attention to detail. Now semi-retired, he enjoys restoring antique cars and connecting with his community in new ways.

In every aspect of his life, Mike embodies the values that credit unions stand for: people helping people, responsible stewardship, and cooperative spirit. His leadership has helped shape not only the direction of North Star Community Credit Union, but also the broader vision of what it means to serve.

The Dakota Credit Union Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes one individual each year from North and South Dakota who goes above and beyond in demonstrating service, leadership, and dedication to cooperative principles. In receiving this award, Mike Black joins an elite group of credit union champions whose passion for people and commitment to the cooperative spirit continue to shape the future of the credit union movement. This recognition stands a testament to a lifetime of selfless contribution, a deep-rooted commitment to people helping people, and a legacy of leadership that continues to inspire.
