Celebrating National Co-op Month with NSCCU
Every October, cooperatives across the country come together to celebrate National Co-op Month - a time to raise awareness of a trusted, proven way to do business and strengthen communities. This year’s theme, “Cooperatives Build a Better World,” shines a spotlight on the people-centered approach that sets cooperatives apart and creates a more resilient, inclusive future.
At North Star Community Credit Union, we’re proud to be part of this cooperative movement. As a credit union, we are more than a financial institution—we are a cooperative owned by the very members we serve. That means every decision we make is guided by the people who live, work, and grow alongside us, not by outside shareholders. Our mission is rooted in helping members achieve their financial goals while building stronger communities across North Dakota.
How Cooperatives Build a Better World
Cooperatives come in many forms - finance, agriculture, housing, food, childcare, and more. What unites them is a shared commitment to putting people first and creating opportunities that benefit everyone. Credit unions like North Star Community Credit Union are proof that when people pool their resources and work together, they can create meaningful change.
For our members, that means:
- Local ownership and control. Every member has a voice and a vote in how we operate.
- Community reinvestment. From supporting local events to offering affordable financial services, we put money back into the communities we serve.
- Shared success. When North Star Community Credit Union thrives, our members benefit through better rates, lower fees, and programs designed to meet real needs.
Did You Know?
Co-op Month has a long and proud history:
- Minnesota was the first state to declare an official Co-op Month in 1948.
- It became a nationally recognized celebration in 1964, when U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman proclaimed October as Co-op Month.
- Every year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture continues this tradition with an official proclamation.
